TEST CASE: Teak Outside Furniture Cleaning

TEST CASE - TEAK OUTSIDE FURNITURE CLEANING

Teak Outside Furniture Cleaning

Situation:

Once a year thoroughly clean the outside teak furniture. This teak furniture remains outside the year round, has no covers and is cleaned once per year. When the furniture is left outside, black and dark brown colors form on the surface. Plain water and ordinary cleaners do not remove the discoloration of black and brown colors. Teak cleaners are expensive, have an odor, must be applied wearing gloves and eyewear and often requires a second cleaning.

Testing Goal:

Use the ZolaTerra® Pro 16 to clean the furniture with one application without odors, without gloves and without special handling.

Conditions:

  • Location: North Carolina

  • Siting: Outside courtyard (Not covered)

  • Substrate: Teak wood furniture

  • Ambient Air Temperature: 70°F

  • Ambient Water Temperature: 65°F

Application:

  • Product: ZolaTerra® Pro 16 Cleaner

  • Method: Wet the teak surface with a hand sprayer and or soft bristle scrub brush, after 2 to 5 minutes lightly scrub the surface with a soft bristle scrub brush.  Rinsed/Pressure Washed all surfaces thoroughly with home owners electric high pressure sprayer rated at ~1800 psi.

  • Application psi: Hand sprayer had less than 5 psi

  • Surface condition at application: Pre-wet teak with water, pre-treated all the surfaces, lightly scrub with a soft bristle scrub brush and rinsed with an electric high-pressure home sprayer at ~1800 psi

  • Dwell Time: 2 to 5 minutes (it did not seem to matter if I left it dwell until the point at which the ZolaTerra® Pro 16 cleaner almost dried or in other words ~15 minutes of dwell time.)

  • Drying: Open air outside drying both in the shade and in the sun. It did not make a difference.

Results:

After pre-wetting the teak surface with ZolaTerra® Pro 16, lightly scrubbing with a brush, rinsing a power sprayer and letting to air dry the furniture came clean. All the black and dark brown were removed from the surface and a light tan finish was shown. The furniture was then ready for a new year of use or for finishing with teak oil. The finish is a personal preference. Also, the rinsing water run-off did not harm the local plants or grass.
